Narrative / Investigation
I produced ‘Call Bethel’ with the Telegraph’s investigation team. The series looked into whether Jehovah’s Witnesses in the UK had been failing to report cases of sexual abuse. ‘Call Bethel’ won best news podcast at The Press Awards 2023 and was nominated for best documentary at the BPAs. But most importantly it resonated with many people within that community who sadly had first hand experience of this subject.
I was a consulting producer on BBC Sounds’ ‘Where It’s At: A Short History of Girlbands’. I advised on scripting and the narrative arc for this Radio 1 podcast series hosted by Mollie King.
Most recently I was lead producer on an Audible Original series called ‘Beyond 5 Senses’ with the neuroaesthetics studio, Kinda. It sits at the intersection of neuroscience and wellbeing. For this I was responsible for booking the human interest stories and worked with a scriptwriter to form the arc of each episode. I then produced the interviews, script reads and the dry edits.
Interview
I produced and sound designed several episodes of Kate Hutchinson’s brilliant series ‘The Last Bohemians’, which paints audio portraits of maverick women over 60 . I worked on episodes featuring Angelyne, Marina Abramovic, Lynn Castle, Zandra Rhodes, and Penny Slinger. These are creative and thoughtful depictions of women who have led exciting and complicated lives.
For ‘Why Women Grow’ I came up with a podcast concept to complement Alice Vincent’s book of the same name. It’s a series of interviews with women in their gardens. I love to take podcasts out of the studio and this is a great example of how you can get something surprising out of your subjects if you put them in the right location. WWG topped the Leisure chart on Apple Podcasts when it came out in 2023.
I am producer of ‘In Haste’, a chatty literary show that lifts the lid on authors’ creative processes. The podcast exists as an integral part of the hosts’ online community that they have created on Substack, with bonus content for paid subscribers.
Branded
While I was at Monocle Radio I worked as creative lead on many branded podcast projects for clients such as Chanel, Rolex, Audi, KEF, Lufthansa, Longines, the Japanese government and more. For the high end audio company, KEF I created ‘The Power of Sound’, a series of short, illustrated interviews with people who work with sound in some way: musicians, recordists, conductors, composers and so on. For this I won bronze in the Creativity Award at the BPAs, as nominated by my peers.
For Rolex I made ‘The Pioneers’, which showcased incredible innovators around the world who had been selected as Rolex Laureates. For Audi I travelled the globe making a series about road trips in Hawaii, California, Scotland, and Thailand to reveal adventures you could make in their new E-Tron car.
I have recently worked on the third series of ‘An Idiot’s Guide to Saving the World’ with Auddy for client, Project Everyone. It’s an upbeat magazine style show that seeks to encourage the listener to think about how we can work towards a better planet, based around the UN’s Global Goals and how we are going to achieve them. For the latest series we spoke to former president of Ireland, Mary Robinson and Olympian Hannah Mills, among others to learn about trailblazing tactics in the fight for a sustainable and equal future. In previous series we met people on the frontline who are coming up with ideas to tackle climate change, water shortage, and access to education.
Weeklies
Having started out my career at a radio station I have vast experience in turning around fast-paced weekly programmes. I was senior producer of Monocle’s flagship arts show ‘Monocle on Culture’ between 2015-2021, which featured high profile guests, various arts critics and reports from different scenes around the globe.
During this period I also produced and hosted a weekly live music programme called ‘The Sessions at Midori House’, where we invited in well known popstars and fresh new artists to have a chat and play a few tracks.
More recently, I have worked on an ad-hoc basis at the Guardian on their ‘Science Weekly’ podcast. A 15 minute digest of a topical science story, which is often in the top 10 of Apple Podcasts’ Science chart. Subjects include should nature have rights? What have we learnt from cancer-causing viruses? and, what would happen if a solar storm hit Earth?
Audiobook and creative audio
I worked with WeTransfer’s content platform, WePresent to turn some of their creative writing series ‘Literally’ in to audio essays. This involved studio producing the writers reading out their work and then creating a sonic world for their words to live in. I did this with Liv Little, Megan Nolan and Yemisi Aribisala. I also worked on WePresent’s year-long collaboration with the actor Russell Tovey. As part of this they commissioned several artists to write and record pieces that reflected on Derek Jarman’s film, ‘Blue’. I studio produced and edited this series. By putting these very personal essays into audio they become even more intimate and moving.
In 2023 Somesuch released the ‘Bone’ issue of their literary journal. I worked with the poets and writers involved to turn the journal into an audiobook for subscribers to listen to. Some are read by their authors, others by actors. Some are sound designed and others left bare. It was a really fun project to think about the texture of stories and prose when they sit side by side.
